A Practical Guide to Using Probationary Periods
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at members of SLT, SBMs, HR team members, and line managers that may be involved in the management or oversight of staff within their probationary period.
Intended Outcomes
This course provides practical advice and guidance to managers on how best to utilise probationary periods within schools. Schools do not often utilise probationary periods or use them to their best advantage. At the end of the course participants will:
- Understand the purpose and benefits of a probationary period;
- Understand how these can and should be used in relation to different types of roles;
- Understand how and when probationary reviews should be undertaken and what these meetings should entail;
- Understand the school’s options if there are performance concerns; and
- Understand how to complete, extend and terminate a probationary period.
Cost

The cost of this session starts at £995 plus VAT for up to 20 participants for clients of the Employment Law & HR Service. Each additional participant will be charged at £55 plus VAT per head. Where the session is to be delivered on site, in person, reasonable travel expenses will be charged in addition to the session cost.
